Since the clubs beginnings, Chelsea have had four different team crests with their very first team emblem being of a Chelsea pensioner which is where the clubs former nickname, “The Pensioners”, originates. This crest remained unchanged for the best part of half a century despite never featuring on the team’s shirt once during this period. In 1952 the club went through a period of modernisation and image changes which resulted in the pensioner crest being removed from the match day programmes.
Along with this, Chelsea’s emblem was temporarily changed for one year to C.F.C., the team’s initials. It was in 1953 that Chelsea first saw the introduction of the blue lion as their team crest, along with other elements taken from the coat of arms used by the London Borough of Chelsea. This emblem was also the first to be sported on a Chelsea football shirt in 1960 and since this the logo has been changed another two times, in 1986 and 2004 with the bases of the crest remaining the same with slight design alterations to present a more modern image for the club with each alteration.

Traditionally and from the clubs early beginnings, the team have played in the colour blue, however this was originally a much lighter shade then what they play in today. As with all clubs in the English Football League, they also have an away kit which has been traditionally yellow or white with a blue trim. However, as with almost all professional football clubs this away kit has continued to change year on year. The teams current football shirts are manufactured by sportswear giant Adidas, who are contracted to product these shirts from 2006 to the 2011 season. Prior to this, the team had a long standing contract with Umbro to make their team shirts which ended when Adidas we’re contracted to this role.
