Liverpool Football Club
Liverpool Football Club was founded on March 15 in 1892 after a financial disagreement between Everton Football Club and John Houlding the landowner of Anfield, used previously by the rival club Everton. Liverpool then started in the championship of Lancashire. Liverpool FC got into the England championships in 1893 and won its first title in 1901.
In 1959, Liverpool welcomes its new manager Bill Shankly, who decided that players will be dressed all in red to impress their opponent. Shankly's work paid off and Liverpool returned to the first division and won many national titles in particular the FA Cup in 1965. It is in 1973 that Liverpool got its European recognition by winning the UEFA Cup against Bourousia-Munchen Gladbach.

Then under the leadership of Bob Paisley and later by Joe Fagan, Liverpool FC will make an legendary record of achievements, thanks to four successful Champions Clubs' Cup during the period 1977 to 1984. But a dramatic event will occur during the 1985 final between Liverpool and Juventus: the Heysel tragedy, causing the death of thirty-nine fans. This Hooligans’s madness will stop English clubs to participate in European competitions for five years. As for Liverpool, the club was supposed to be away from European competitions for a decade, but this penalty was reduced to six years. |
It was then the turn of Kenny Dalgish to be the new coach. His work will bring Liverpool to achieve major success on the national scene, but in 1989, the club is again affected by a tragedy, in Hillsborough, where 96 supporters died. Dalgish then left and was replaced by Graeme Souness and Roy Evans but neither of them was able to compete with the success of the past.
Gérard Houllier was appointed manager of the club, in 2001 he did an incredible grand slam with the club by winning the 3 titles (League, FA and UEFA), and Michael Owen won the Ballon d'Or.
On 13 October 2001, during a game against Leeds United, Gérard Houllier got an heart failiure and went through heavy heart operation. His job was then put aside. A few months later, he makes a triumphant return to Anfield. In 2003 despite a victory in the League Cup and a second place in the league, the love story between Liverpool and Houllier ended. At the end of the 2003/04 season, his contract was not renewed and he was replaced in 2004 by Rafael Benitez from Valencia. In 2005, Liverpool won its fifth Champions League against AC Milan, after being led 3-0 at half time.
In October 2006, Kenny Daglish was elected the most popular player of Liverpool before Gerrard, Rush, Fowler and Barnes.
